There are two sets of course numbers used campus-wide for undergraduate research: those for course credit and those for pay. Courses are named in the following format (with course number preceded by the name of school for which you will be doing research, e.g., BIOL 4699, ME 2698):
- 2699: Research experience for course credit for freshman and sophomore students.
- 4699: Research experience for course credit for junior and senior students.
- 2698: Research experience for pay for freshman and sophomore students.
- 4698: Research experience for pay for junior and senior students.
Students doing research for graded academic credit will sign up for either 2699 or 4699 within the school of their faculty research mentor. Students who will be paid for their research work or are working on a volunteer basis with a faculty member should sign up for the non-billable audit courses 2698 or 4698 within the school of their faculty research mentor. Freshmen and sophomores should sign up for the 2698/2699 courses, and juniors and seniors should sign up for the 4698/4699 courses.
These are variable credit hour courses. If you are doing research for course credit, you must first discuss with your research professor how many hours you should register for. As a general rule of thumb, one credit hour translates to approximately three hours in lab per week. OSCAR will register you for one credit hour by default, therefore you must log in and change it to your preferred number of hours.
Students may not receive pay and course credit for the same research project during the same semester. Students must obtain permits to register for all four courses.
